چکیده

Aim We assessed the effects of regional oceanographic shifts on macrofaunal biodiversity and biogeography cold-water coral reefs (CWCRs). CWCRs are often hotspots ecosystem services in frontline exposure to multiple human pressures climate change. Almost nothing is known about how large-scale atmospheric variability affects structure CWCRs’ communities over ecological timescales, this hinders their efficient conservation. This knowledge gap especially evident for species-rich macrofauna, a key component functioning. Location The Mingulay Reef Complex, protected biogenic northeast Atlantic (120–190 m). Methods A unique time series (2003–2011) at 79 stations was used make first assessment interannual changes biodiversity, functional traits. quantified impacts North Oscillation Index (NAOI)—the major mode Atlantic, bottom temperature salinity alongside static variables seafloor terrain hydrography. Results Environmental gradients explained significant amount community composition ( = 26.7%, p < .01) with temperature, NAOI explaining nearly twice as much than or observed differences composition, diversity traits but not species richness across temperature. In warmer years, biogeographic shifted more towards temperate subtropical affinity. Main Conclusions Our findings highlight necessity thorough investigations faunal they may be sensitive oceanography. Considering scientific consensus substantial warming by 2100, we recommend establishment programmes monitoring CWCRs. will support an advanced understanding environmental status serve conservation future.

Regional Endothermy in a Coral Reef Fish?

Although a few pelagic species exhibit regional endothermy, most fish are regarded as ectotherms. However, we document significant regional endothermy in a benthic reef fish. Individual steephead parrotfish, Chlorurus microrhinos (Labridae, formerly Scaridae) were tagged and their internal temperatures were monitored for a 24 h period using active acoustic telemetry. At night, on the reef, C. m...

Preindustrial to modern interdecadal variability in coral reef pH.

The oceans are becoming more acidic due to absorption of anthropogenic carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The impact of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems is unclear, but it will likely depend on species adaptability and the rate of change of seawater pH relative to its natural variability. To constrain the natural variability in reef-water pH, we measured boron isotopic compositions in ...

In Situ Coral Nurseries Serve as Genetic Repositories for Coral Reef Restoration after an Extreme ColdWater Event

During an unusual cold-water event in January 2010, reefs along the Florida Reef Tract suffered extensive coral mortality, especially in shallow reef habitats in close proximity to shore and with connections to coastal bays. The threatened staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis, is the focus of propagation and restoration activities in Florida and one of the species that exhibited high susceptibi...
